About NYC ACC KILLS memoriam posts

Information in NYC ACC KILLS memoriam posts is drawn from reader tips and the NYC ACC “at-risk outcomes” list. As evidenced by its monthly and annual outcome data reports, ACC kills far more cats and dogs than appear on the at-risk list. ACC exterminates many healthy and adoptable cats and dogs without first offering them for adoption. Victims of this ACC practice are known among advocates as “silent kills.”

ACC will often spay or neuter a cat or dog only to exterminate her or him during recovery, or soon after. This practice is known as “spay-neuter-kill.”

Known silent kills and spay-neuter-kill victims are identified as such by NYC ACC KILLS.

A note about names: Many animals come to NYC ACC with unknown histories, including their names. In addition, ACC does not always use the name a cat or dog is accustomed to, even if the agency knows what it is. As a result, many animals exterminated by ACC are never properly identified. Unfortunately, for the most part NYC ACC KILLS has only the names provided by ACC, even if those names are incorrect or nonsensical. ACC-assigned names are presented here without quotation marks unless TSNY can confirm an animal was known by a different name when admitted to ACC.

NYC ACC operates under putative supervision by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, which endorses killing healthy and adoptable cats and dogs at will and with impunity.

Though ACC is supported by taxpayers, the city conceals ACC personnel contact information from New Yorkers. As a public service, The Scoop New York makes ACC staff email addresses available to readers.

In February 2026, the city’s health commissioner was Alister Martin. Martin’s boss, the mayor, was Zohran Mamdani. Contact information for officials responsible for ACC oversight appears below.

Note that ACC omits from its “euthanasia” totals owner-surrendered animals who were exterminated without being offered for adoption. Placement rates reported by ACC do not include such cats and dogs, but they are counted among the dead by TSNY.

Animals whom ACC classifies as “died in care” or “lost in care” are named and counted by TSNY, among the cats and dogs ACC destroyed with intent.

In memoriam

CATS

Eminem Meowthers [247972]: 3 years old; killed February 28. Eminem Meowthers, a stray cat, who was noted to be calm and timid, was listed for medical reasons. ACC wrote: “He is a young sweet cat and recovering from a urinary obstruction. He needs monitoring and pain management in a veterinary clinic to recover.” Instead, ACC killed him on day 10.

DOGS

Candy [244352]: 1 year old; killed February 1. “Candy,” a volunteer said, “is a sensitive soul. In her kennel, she shrinks herself into a ball, trying to block out the noise of the overcrowded shelter.…Candy was found by the police tied up and alone. She was nervous and scared, but so clearly gentle and loving. At the shelter she warms up quickly, although she does need a patient person to give her the same kindness and sweetness she gives....In the yard, she realizes that the best spot for her is resting her head against us, smooshing it in for warmth and comfort.”

Candy was adopted and returned the next day after the adopter grabbed her by the collar to get her off the couch and she nipped. Upon return to ACC she became stressed, digging in her kennel to try to get out. ACC killed Candy three weeks later.

Rocky Boy [245656]: 2 years old; killed February 2. Rocky Boy came to ACC wiggly, tail wagging, and almost immediately caught CIRDC. ACC wrote: “Medically, Rocky Boy is receiving treatment for CIRDC but has not been eating his medication consistently. His behavior may preclude appropriate treatment if he does not improve medically.”

What behavior? His owner abandoned him, reporting a bite to the hand, but ACC didn’t have any details about the incident. They never gave him a handling assessment, and all but ignored him.

There were only two notes on Rocky Boy in ACC records. On the 21st, he was “standing at the front of his kennel with a soft body….One handler easily leashes him while the second offers him treats before swapping. Once double-leashed, he is moved to isolation for his CIRDC. He tolerates the leads being clipped and enters the new kennel without issue.” On the 27th, he’s “sitting in the back of his kennel, lip licking and wagging his tail. ACS reported that he doesn’t want to move over his transfer door. The handler helps by tossing treats through the transfer door, which Rocky Boy quickly follows.”

Did they give him the “appropriate treatment” for CIRDC? ACC killed Rocky Boy on day 20.

Bonnie [245388]: 4 years old; killed February 2. Highly social and wiggly on intake, Bonnie, a stray, was also very nervous. She did her best to cooperate, remained very social, and was happiest when outside — tossing her toys, bouncy and exuberant on walks. A big fan of treats, for which she would sit patiently, they said she would greet handlers with her “trademark full-body wiggle.” ACC killed Bonnie on day 23.

“Maxie Waxie” [240006]: 2 years old; killed February 4. Maxie Waxie — whose name was changed from Max by ACC — lived happily with his family, which included children and cats, until he was surrendered due to the landlord’s no pet policy. His human said they saved him from an abusive home when he was a puppy.

“An awesome dog with lots of energy,” his human said, affectionate and playful with all, including other dogs. Asked their favorite thing about him, they said, “He has a beautiful soul and his eyes say the most. I love how fast and strong he is. He’s very, very, playful.” Staff at ACC agreed: “He’s an energetic, social guy who enjoys treats, toys, and playful engagement with his handlers.” After saddling him with a nonsense name, which they do to amuse themselves, ACC killed Max on day 85.

Otter [245582]: 5 years old; killed February 4. Found in an abandoned building and extremely scared, Otter got braver every day.

One volunteer said, Otter “who is as cute as his name implies…went from lunging and growling at new people to being loose bodied when people approach his kennel, tapping his paws and pushing at the door to come out. And today, when we finally get to meet him, it’s hard to imagine the fractious Otter that first arrived because all we get is sweet, ham, mushball Otter who leans into us for petting and more treats.” Another said, “Otter is a total love.”

His video recorded his journey from scared boy to brave little man. Didn’t matter to ACC; they killed Otter on day 23.

Doeby [183902]: 4 years old; killed February 4. Everyone loved Doeby, who lost her family when they moved to NYCHA housing. Gentle, loving, and loyal, her family said. Volunteers agreed. “She listened well, loved treats, and soaked up attention. She was playful but also happily content,” one said.

Another said, “This incredibly affectionate, human-adoring pup, who once lived with other dogs in a home, has become increasingly stressed in the shelter environment and needs out. Doeby is a social butterfly and greets all her people on our way out of the shelter, and on our way back in.”

A great leash walker, Doeby loved exploring and also “loves to snuggle with you on the backyard bench or score a butt scratch or hug.” ACC killed Doeby on day 49.

Archibold [245743]: 4 years old; killed February 4. Archibold, a stray, came in very friendly and outgoing with staff. Underweight with an infected wound from a deeply embedded dewclaw, Archibold tried to cooperate but didn’t want to return to his kennel.

“Archibold is long-legged, lanky, and spirited,” a volunteer says. He is also “curious and really enjoys exploring on his street walks.” He liked to “disembowel and explode squeaky toys. Archie can get easily excited in the yard with too many soft toys around, but he is affectionate and sweet.” ACC killed Archibold on day 20.

Rahki [246045] 5 years old; killed February 4. Rahki, adopted from ACC, was returned because of a child’s allergies and was killed 15 days later, a silent kill. We don’t know why.

Fernando [245991]: 2 years old; killed February 7. Fernando, left by his owner at the police station, was trembling and terrified on intake, seeking exit. They titled his video “Fernando learning to trust,” and as the video shows, he did look to humans for comfort, even jumping into the laps of staff he didn’t know. But this worried little guy didn’t get the time he needed to decompress and find a new home. ACC killed Fernando on day 19.

Hoss [243261]: 3 years old; killed February 10. Hoss, an underweight stray, was “extremely timid and fearful,” said a volunteer. “Once outside, Hoss is still shy but is very sweet and gentle as he gains confidence.” Days later, the volunteer said, “Hoss absolutely surprised me. Not timid at all today, Hoss was confident and happy to be leashed and taken out for a walk. He is gentle and affectionate and loves treats and squeaky toys…Hoss is just lovely!”

Hoss gained the confidence to be easily leashed. Who knows what else he could have accomplished if ACC hadn’t killed him on day 64.

Adelaide [247321]: 10 years old; killed February 11. Found running loose in a park, 10 year old Adelaide was a silent kill, a dog ACC never tried to place for rescue or adoption.

ACC killed Adelaide three days after she was found in Canarsie Park, Brooklyn.

Paladin [245527]: 3 years old; killed February 12. Paladin, a stray, came into the shelter nervous, afraid to get into the kennel.

Notes during his stay reveal a different dog altogether: He met the greeter dog with a soft body and wagging tail, was consistently loose bodied, easily leashed, and attentive on walks. But first impressions become damning labels at ACC, where they killed Paladin day 32.

Gazelle [246217]: 2 years old; killed February 14. Gazelle arrived a fearful stray, her ears wounded and badly infected.

ACC suggested she stayed fearful. A volunteer said something quite different: “This dog is an angel!!!! The sweetest, kindest, most affectionate baby who is clearly so uncomfortable [ear infection] but so eager for love (and to share it!). When she first came in she didn’t like to be pet on her head, but a look into her ears shows that she must be suffering...and even so, now she LOVES to be pet! She walks beautifully, takes treats like an angel, and will make the gentlest companion.”

In her video, where she stands calmly, gently accepting treats, you can hear the handler saying, “Oh sweetie…I love her.” ACC killed 2-year-old Gazelle on Valentine’s Day, day 20.

Symphony [246448]: 5 years old; killed February 14. Mama dog Symphony, found stray, came in trembling, avoiding interaction, and very fearful.

ACC assessed her to be in heat on arrival. Within a short period of time, she began to cautiously accept pets, started wagging her tail, and was easily leashed.

Like so many dogs at ACC, she needed time but didn’t get it. ACC killed Symphony on day 18.

Honeydew [216914]: 2 years old; killed February 14. Honeydew was at NYC ACC three times, the first as an emaciated 1-year-old puppy, sick, her hair falling out with the lightest touch. The second time, a year later, she again arrived an emaciated stray. On both occasions, she came to ACC tail wagging, soliciting attention and affection.

A volunteer said she was “consistently sweet and social at the shelter—leaning into touch, playing fetch, and gently taking snacks. She appreciates baby talk, and has even been learning a few tricks in our care.…We quickly put her in a little costume to hide her emaciation. Her first Halloween look is a snoopy costume. She is a great sport and rocks that outfit. Her second look is a big pumpkin sweater. She is too skinny to fill it out but she’s still a rockstar at modeling our Halloween collection.”

The third return to ACC may have been the hardest. “Adopted for a whopping 15 days,” a volunteer said, “even though she seems so perfect to me. They said she’s a big sweetheart who loves to cuddle with her family, play with rubber toys or balls, and chew sticks. She is great with other dogs and takes no time to warm up to them but might steal their toys.” She was returned because when startled she snapped at a roommate’s leg — didn’t break skin — then fled the room and hid.

A staff member wrote: “Honeydew is a bright, people-seeking pup who leans in for affection and lights up for toys and training. She’s the kind of dog who learns fast, loves a ‘trade,’ and will happily play fetch between cuddle breaks.”

Still, ACC killed her. A video of Honeydew on a day break from the shelter reveals what a darling pup she was — everything a dog could be. Honeydew, enrolled in the ACC Shelter Scholar program, was killed on day 70.

Central [246830]: 3 years old; killed February 15. Central, a stray, came to ACC tail wagging and allowed all handling during his medical exam. Social with staff, he soon became sick with CIRDC. He was, like many strays, dog reactive. Easily leashed to go out, he didn’t want to go back into his kennel.

Given no chances and a dehumanizing name, ACC put Central on the “at risk” (of extermination by ACC) list on day six and killed him on day 11.

Maynard [246699]: 8 years old; killed February 15. The police who found 100-pound Maynard said he was friendly, and on ACC intake remained calm. Nervous and timid during his medical exam the next day, he was flagged by ACC for neglect with severe degenerative joint disease/osteoarthritis believed to be caused by severely overgrown nails.

After a week at ACC, he was no longer calm; he was terrified, spooked by the dogs barking at him and afraid to leave his kennel.

For exhibiting fear, ACC killed Maynard on day 14.

Nuevo [244513]; 2 years old; killed February 16. Nuevo, a timid stray, trembling during his medical exam, was social with staff despite feeling poorly most of his time at ACC.

ACC dosed Nuevo with a boatload of drugs: Trazodone, Clonidine, and Gabapentin. Nuevo had persistent GI issues, and ulcerated paw pads that caused him to limp.

Noted to be consistently panting, hyper salivating, and barking, ACC diagnosed kennel stress. Instead of working to alleviate that stress, ACC killed Nuevo day 57.

Buddy [227498]: 3 years old; killed February 16. Buddy was at NYC ACC three times over a nine-month period. The first time he was a stray found abandoned in a yard with another dog and two puppies. They noted evidence of trauma — a wound on his head that didn’t appear to be a bite. The second time, he was brought in by a friend of his new owner with a vague claim of being aggressive to other dogs. This time ACC wrote that he was timid, tense, and underweight. The third time he was brought in by his new owner for barking and lunging at dogs in the hallway. True to form, ACC responded by pumping him with the “shelter” compliance cocktail: human doses of human sedatives Trazodone, Clonidine, and Gabapentin.

Buddy may not have been good with other dogs, but he truly loved people. “Buddy’s a total, wonderful surprise,” said a volunteer. “He’s a complete lovebug. We hung out in the backyard in the evening and all he wanted to do is jump up on the bench and cuddle with me. Wow. Can’t wait to walk him again during daylight hours.”

After labeling his video “gentle soul,” ACC killed Buddy on day 36.

Paris [245973]: 5 years old; killed February 17. Abandoned by her owner, Paris was initially very scared, avoiding contact, eying the door for escape. Even in the “at risk” memo, which is supposed to explain why the “shelter” kills a dog, ACC admitted that Paris had made “significant improvement with sociability…begun to be easily walked, solicit contact.”

This was their last note about her, days before they killed her: “Paris is loose, wiggly body at front of kennel as handler approaches. Paris stands on hindlegs once, drops down and is easily leashed. Paris pulls moderately out of kennel, pounces exuberantly when exiting room to hallway. Paris ignores barking dogs in kennels. Paris takes treats gently from handler, allows all petting, gentle and exuberant with a loose body, also jumps on to handler in a social manner with loose body. Paris is walked on sidewalk, maintains mild pull, loose body with wagging tail. Paris continues to be social with handler, checks in visually when verbally cued, and jumps on handler in a social manner. Paris is walked back to MACC. In elevator and driveway Paris approaches familiar staff with loose-wiggly body. Paris is walked back to kennel, her leash is clipped and removed without issue.”

Four days later, on day 29, ACC killed Paris for fearful behavior ACC said she no longer had.

Etho [245757]: 1 year old; killed February 18. The police who found Etho wandering the streets said he was friendly, and he remained so at ACC.

Etho, a volunteer said, “is a very sweet boy with familiar handlers, often leaning in for pets or propping up on laps. He isn’t a fan of the other dogs there, and for that he’s on death row. He’s just a scared (very cute) puppy!”

ACC killed Etho on day 32.

Tyson [217386]; 3 years old; killed February 18. Tyson came to ACC with Fox [217387] as bonded strays. Tyson was killed 13 days later: a silent kill, so we don’t have information about him.

We do know that Fox, whom ACC killed a few weeks later, had been at ACC a year before and was reclaimed by his owner, then returned as a stray with Tyson.

Choo Choo [243708]: 4 years old; killed February 19. ACC kept changing Choo Choo’s name — first Trampoline, then Train Conductor.

Another mystery: after being there almost two months, why did he only have a nine second video?

Choo Choo, a volunteer said, was a “gregarious, attention-loving pup…a sweet, squeaky toy-loving, four-year-old doll of a dog. Very cute and lovable.” He “loved walking with a stuffy toy in his mouth. He’s a big love with sore paws that are very quickly healing.”

ACC neutered Choo Choo before killing him on day 56.

Moo Lan [245362]: 1 year old; killed February 19. A volunteer said, “About a month ago Moo was dropped off at a police station by someone saying they could not keep her anymore. Since then, except for a brief stay with a foster, she’s been living in a kennel at NYCACC. Moo is young and seems like a playful girl. But when we hang out with her she seemed happiest on a lap, sitting on her bum like a little kid and with her feet gathered together in a little bouquet. She ate snacks and had her belly rubbed and seemed incredibly content in that moment.”

“Moo-Lan (Moo),” her foster said, “is the sweetest, cuddliest dog you’ve ever met. She wants nothing more than to lay down next to you and snuggle under a blanket with you. Moo Lan loves as many toys and intellectual stimulation [as] you can give. She’s so cute; her ears are always in the most whimsical position, and she will most definitely be the cutest shadow you’ll ever have.….she is very socially anxious around other dogs (but thankfully, not humans!).”

Working with a trainer at ACC, Moo Lan was successfully learning how to turn her back on barking dogs. ACC spayed Moo Lan three weeks before killing her, on day 41.

Chloe [245314]: 4 years old; killed February 20. Chloe’s owners left her with someone and never came back. On arrival at ACC, she had a wound from an overgrown nail embedded in her paw pad, was lame, and in need of TLC.

Social and wiggly with familiar handlers, she begged for belly rubs from those she trusted. Being so cute, she got lots of them. ACC killed Chloe on day 22.

Zoe [245893]: 2 years old; killed February 20. Zoe arrived at ACC with 30 bite puncture wounds from an altercation between dogs at her home. She had recently had a litter and was being kept in a separate room when the door was left open and the other two dogs got in.

The owners blamed Zoe. They called the police, who said Zoe remained calm in the crate during transport. At ACC she was very social, wiggly and wagging, easily leashed and walked, with no notes on or signs of agression. She liked to toss toys in the air and catch them. ACC killed Zoe on day 33.

Sunny [241702]: 5 years old; killed Feb 20. Aptly named Sunny, a volunteer says of him, “His face is irresistibly cute. Everything about him is big — from his sheer [86] pounds and big bounces when he sees us hold a tennis ball to his wiggles when you scratch the right spot. And while many dogs are unimpressed with the snow, Sunny happily bounds around, gently digs, and emerges with a snow covered face and a smile. He hands you his paw and sits whenever asked, happy to show what he’s learned in a past life we know nothing about.…a big, playful, curious boy.”

ACC killed Sunny, a stray, on day 99.

Megabron [245595]: 5 years old; killed February 22. Cute Megabron, dumped at a police station, was a bit anxious on intake but allowed all handling and was made happy with treats.

A volunteer said, “He’s trying very hard to be a good boy. He likes to carry his stuffy on walks, and proudly show it off to you, picking it up and holding it with eyes filled with pride. He loves attention and clearly he is not getting enough of it.”

What he didn’t want to do was go back into his cage after walks or playtime. ACC killed Megabron on day 40.

Luna [243395]: 1 year old; killed February 23. Underweight Luna was a mama too soon — possibly bred with the male dog also dumped by her owner. She had lived with her owner for just six months and was reported to have spent most of her time outside. Her ears were poorly cropped. On intake ACC said she was gentle and nervous.

“A big shy girl with a tough exterior,” a volunteer said of Luna. “She’s just a big baby at heart. And when I look into her big, dark eyes, I just melt. Luna walks nicely by my side, glancing up occasionally to check in with me. She loves treats and is highly food motivated. She’s been quiet and gentle and in her short time in the shelter has really grown on me.”

ACC killed Luna on day 61.

Billy [247439]: 8 years old; killed February 24. What happened to Billy? Darted to be removed from his home, he came to ACC with his fur matted with feces, very afraid.

Treats and toys yielded gentle tail wags, but mostly Billy was terrified and didn’t get the help he needed. ACC killed Billy on day 12.

Blizzard [248208]: 13 years old; killed Feb 25. A silent kill, Blizzard was exterminated three days after she was admitted to ACC as a stray.

Chunky Monkey [247735]: 1 year old, killed Feb 26. ACC never tried to find a home for puppy Chunky Monkey. He was a silent kill. Asked why they killed him, ACC wrote, “Chunky Monkey was approved for no placement due to low threshold for arousal and grabbing staff members ankles.” In other words, he was a puppy.

Chunky Monkey was found on February 16 and killed by the “animal care center” 10 days later.

Scoob [244378]: 1 year old; killed February 27. Puppy Scoob, says a volunteer, was “69 lbs of adolescent energy and behavior. And yet he managed to disarm us with his charm. Running across the yard he flew onto a lap, and a summer Olympics would say he stuck the landing. I truly don’t think he cared that he was entirelv too big to fit, he was pleased to be where he was.”

Scoob, a stray, was found outside a pizzeria eating from the trash. Apparently, he stole a glove from someone’s pocket to play with, but politely dropped it when asked. On intake ACC wrote that he was “very sweet and friendly.” His leash biting, for which ACC killed him, began only after he’d been at ACC for a few weeks. Scoob was killed on day 64.

Chance [247338]: 4 years old; killed February 28. Chance, a stray ACC named, didn’t get one. They killed him 17 days after he was admitted with a bleeding toe mass. ACC did remove the toe mass when they neutered him — 10 days before killing him, ostensibly for leash biting.

“From the moment I met Chance,” a volunteer said, “I was happy that I had. I found him lying in his kennel, cone flattened to the ground. He lit up when he knew it was his turn to go out, wagging his big cone head to the front of his kennel to be leashed. The cone made him extra silly, unaware of exactly where his body was. We were able to take it off for a bit and give him a break. And then we could really see that absolutely gorgeous big white head and his inky tear drop shaped eyes. Chance loves a toy, specifically he loves to carry one. He gets a big red one from us and spends the next 10 minutes in full bodied wiggles walking between [us] to show it off. He places it right in my palm to play and is oh so gentle about it! He even carries it all by himself all the way back to his kennel.”

Unfortunately, for the most part NYC ACC KILLS has only the names provided by ACC, even if those names are incorrect or nonsensical. ACC-assigned names are presented here without quotation marks unless TSNY can confirm an animal was known by a different name when admitted to ACC.

NYC ACC operates under putative supervision by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, which endorses killing healthy and adoptable cats and dogs at will and with impunity.

In January 2026, the city’s acting health commissioner was Michelle Morse. Her boss, the mayor, was Zohran Mamdani.

CATS

Tres Leches [245003]: 10 years old; killed January 8. Tres Leches was an emaciated and dehydrated stray cat with a severe injury to his tongue. His finder said she saw Tres Leches outside about two months earlier and offered him food. Tres Leches ran into her home and refused to leave so she allowed him to come in and out for meals as he pleased. During his medical exam, he sat quietly and allowed all handling, giving soft headbutts when a hand was offered. He needed medical attention ACC doesn’t give and was killed on day three, when the mandatory stray hold time was up.

DOGS

Tyrone [241631]: 6 years old; killed January 5. With his worried face and a gentle demeanor, Tyrone described by a handler as a “very chill boy” had a hellish time at NYC ACC. In isolation for CIRDC, which is endemic there; then over sedated by drugs (also endemic) until he wasn’t steady on his feet; those paws also painfully inflamed, probably from walking on salt in the winter. ACC neutered Tyrone, then killed him seven weeks after he arrived.

Zo Juniore [243208]: 2 years old; killed January 5. Zo Juniore was hopeful, noted to be friendly during his medical exam. It was all downhill from there. That he was easily leashed, wiggly, soft-bodied didn’t matter. Not wanting to go back in his cage, being afraid, was a nuisance. They didn’t make a video to help him find a home and took only one photo. Zo was one of countless dogs ACC doesn’t really try to save.

Zo, his human said, was active and playful, fond of tennis balls, running, and eating fruit. Given the triple cocktail of drugs, Trazodone, Gabapentin and Clonidine, NYC ACC killed Zo after 21 days.

Mudpuppy [243517]: 3 years old; killed January 8. Found by the police, Mudpuppy was timid and scared of being collared but he met the “greeter dog” with a wagging tail and staff reported him to be very playful. What tripped him up was the fake hand used to “assess” temperament. He bit. As studies have shown, those tests prove nothing. That Mudpuppy had an ear infection that could have affected his behavior was of no consequence. ACC killed Mudpuppy on day 27.

Bingo [241918]: 1 year old; killed January 8. Bingo’s human most loved the hugs and kisses he gave so freely. A volunteer said, “I love Bingo’s corkscrew piglet tail, but what I love even more is when he gets so happy it vibrates uncontrollably back and forth! [He’s] super pleased when we figure out all the tricks he can do even though he gets a little confused by the cue words. He’s especially delighted when he receives a treat in return. Bingo has the most adorable puppy eyes, beautiful brindle coat and a cheery personality.”

Staff wrote on intake “Bingo had a loose and wiggly body with a wagging tail. He approached staff for pets and took treats rough, staff told him gentle and he took treats gently.” Despite his intelligence and cooperation — and no reported behavior issues at home — they started Bingo on drugs immediately. By the time they were done with Bingo, he was actually bouncing off the walls. Neutered when sick with CIRDC, ACC killed him on day 21.

Yasuke [239742]: 1 year old; killed January 10. Yasuke, a volunteer says, was an “affectionate cuddlebug.” Yasuke had “expressive eyes and a smile that lights up his whole face! He’s friendly, smart, and radiates happy energy. He can be enthusiastic on leash, but he listens well to sit and down cues and is very treat-motivated. When I spent time with him, Yasuke was wiggly, affectionate, and clearly eager to connect, showing off both his intelligence and his big heart.”

Adopted from ACC, he was back four days later as a stray. Whose fault is that? Yasuke, they said, had “poor kennel presence,” whatever that means. Given no grace, he was killed on day 26.

Bushdog [243516]: 1 year old; killed January 10. Cute Bushdog, just a puppy, was “very affectionate, loves rubs, stays by you,” said his human. Soft and wiggly in the shelter, he was consistently easily leashed and would happily sit for treats. A big personality, they said. His fate seemed to be determined by a reported bite incident at home that did not break skin, not anything he did in the shelter. ACC neutered Bushdog, then killed on day 28.

Ally [244105]: 3 years old; killed January 12. Ally’s family loved her so much but when they become homeless they had to go to a shelter. Ally did, too, but hers was a kill shelter. Ally’s human said, “She is friendly, loving, always wants to cuddle and play.“ She also loved bath time, car rides, and running around. Smart, they said, she knew her commands.

She could be anxious, avoiding strangers and dogs. Surrounded by both in the shelter, Ally struggled and ACC heavily sedated her. Outside and on walks, she was able to relax and show herself to be the smart, social pup she was. Still, they killed 3-year-old Ally just 23 days after she arrived.

Walter [244573]: 6 years old; killed January 12. ACC killed Walter after just 14 days. They made no video, making him their target, and harder for him to get a home. He was a scared stray dog. Sometimes he growled (fear?) and sometimes he wagged his tail (hope?) That’s called communicating in dog language. Did they listen? The “compassion for every animal” ACC “care center” gave this cute pup no chance, no love, no time.

Biscuit [240934]: 2 years old; killed January 12. Biscuit was a boy with a worried face. He was dropped off anonymously at a police station. “Transported to the shelter in a crate, he was hunched at the front with a low head, his ears tucked away, and his eyes big with worry,” a volunteer said. “Friendly when taken out of his crate, he grew worried again when put into a kennel ... He seems to love toys and brings them over and even engages in a bit of tug with us! And though he wasn’t enthusiastic about being petted, he stuck close by and I could see him being the ultimate snuggle buddy on a better day in a real home.”

Staff said he’s “energetic, curious, and social with staff. He can be reactive around other dogs and nervous in new situations, but he enjoys attention and will happily engage in play and enrichment activities.” As time went on, Biscuit “shows a wiggly playful side with people he trusts,” is “affectionate and eager to engage” and get this, a “love bug.” ACC killed this love bug after two months.

Knightly [244079]: 2 years old; killed January 13. If there was ever a dog unequipped to be thrust into a chaotic shelter, Knightly was it. He was abandoned by his owner because he grew too big — 62 pounds. Owner said Knightly never went outside, never met another dog.

Knightly was 2 years old and on intake he was trembling and shaking so much he could barely walk. ACC didn’t give him help or training to ease his fears, even though he showed signs this was possible. He leaned in for pets from the handlers he trusted. ACC didn’t give him time; they killed Knightly after just 13 days.

Amira [235701]: 4 years old; killed January 13. Amira “tried to lick everyone in the room” during her medical intake exam. Amira, a staff member said, was “affectionate and social with people — wiggly, eager for attention and always ready to engage.” Returned four days after being adopted because she was too “high energy,” Amira struggled with going back to life confined to a small kennel. They gave her the triple cocktail of drugs, Trazodone, Gabapentin and Clonidine and killed her after five weeks.

Baby Bleu [243608]: 4 years old; killed January 14. They titled Baby Bleu’s video “Sweet Angel.” He is now. A stray, he came in with a wagging tail, seeking attention, super social. Needed diagnostics for a possible vestibular system issue. No surprise, he didn’t get it. Instead, ACC killed him after 32 days. Leash biting was the “crime.”

Bella Rose [244060]: 10 months old; killed January 17. Bouncy Bella Rose was just 10 months old when ACC killed her, 28 days after intake. Her family, who loved her very much, was also in a shelter. Bella Rose was very active and playful, used to taking several one-hour walks each day. They don’t get that in the “shelter.” High energy puppies need activities; instead Bella Rose was dosed with the triple cocktail of human-grade sedatives (Gabapentin, Trazodone and Clonidine), then poisoned her to death.

Tony the Tiger [244974]: 3 years old; killed January 18. ACC killed Tony the Tiger after just 14 days. Tony’s human lost their home and left him at the police station. Tony came to ACC hopeful, friendly, seeking attention but nervous and easily startled. Leashed with ease, he was eager to get out of his kennel. He wasn’t there long enough for anyone to know much about him except that he loved tennis balls.

Mack Moose [243564]: 2 years old; killed January 18. Mack Moose, a stray found tied up, had multiple scars in different stages of healing to his head and neck. Despite trauma, Mack was a sweet social pup. “Mack Moose certainly knows how to ham it up for the camera and we were able to capture his adorable self in no time,” says a volunteer, he “flops at our feet multiple times demanding belly rubs. Our videos are filled with exclamations of ‘I love you’ and he’s so cute and Mack is truly a delight.”

Adopted briefly — described by them as social and affectionate — Mack returned to the NYC kill pound still social and wiggly, but given no mercy. ACC killed Mack Moose on day 23.

Brie [242359]: 2 years old; killed January 18. Staff said stray Brie was “a friendly, wiggly, girl who seeks affection and enjoys being around her people.” Brie was adopted and returned three days later because she was very sick with CIRDC. Sad Brie, back in a pop up crate, let down by “her people,” began to struggle and was killed on day 21.

Kyrie [243864]: 2 years old; killed January 18. Still very much a puppy, said Kyrie’s owner, who surrendered him because he was too active. Said to be playful, protective, and loving, Kyrie spent most of his time in a crate in the living room, despite not doing well while crated. He didn’t get much attention at ACC either — very sparse notes, too many drugs. They killed handsome Kyrie on day 21.

Telanovela [244271]: 2 years old; killed January 18. Cute Telanovela, a stray, was very fearful at first, but with time warmed up and showed off his exuberant side, jumping high for hugs. ACC didn’t like that. Dosed heavily with Trazodone and Gabapentin on intake, ACC veterinary staff later added Clonidine to Telanovela’s compliance cocktail before killing this blue-eyed boy on day 26.

Caesar [244308]: 3 years old; killed January 18. Left alone with a toddler, Caesar bit; his human didn’t know what happened. Caesar came into ACC relaxed with a wagging tail, though underweight. Barely-there “enrichment” notes all show him in the kennel, neutral with a wagging tail. Did he ever leave his kennel? No notes to indicate he did. Did ACC give him care? Assess the situation? No notes suggest they did. Instead, ACC killed Caesar on day 27.

Hoss [244718]: 4 years old; killed January 19. Surrendered to and adopted from ACC three years ago, Hoss came back as a stray. Like on the previous intake, he was very affectionate and wiggly, earning the best possible behavior rating. His video shows what a sweet and loving boy he was. His previous guardian said Hoss loved snuggling and tug of war. ACC exterminated Hoss on day 19 because he needed coaxing to leave and return to his kennel. Non-compliance at the “care center” will not be tolerated.

Daniels [230323]: 4 years old; killed January 19. The landlord kicked 69-lbs Daniels out, ending his perfect life with his family, which included kids and dogs. Daniels loved balls, bones, and running. Very social, active, and playful, said his human. “High arousal,” said ACC, “Jumping on handlers with no manners.” Bad manners don’t precipitate training at ACC. Like so many perfectly normal behaviors, they get you drugged into a stupor prior to death by poisoning. ACC killed family pet Daniels after six weeks.

Parsley Boy [244137]: 2 years old; killed January 20. A volunteer said, “He’s perfect in so many ways! If Parsley had a thought bubble over his head it would likely read, ‘Whatcha doin?’ He’s interested in everyone and everything in the sweetest way, absolutely engaged in the world and at peace with the creatures in it.” Other volunteers praised him as a “gentle hugger.”

A staff member wrote, “After spending weeks in a pop-up crate along a crowded hallway, this sweet, young pup has recently been noted to be increasingly stressed in care.” He was biting at the lock. ACC killed 2-year-old Parsley Boy on day 31.

Paige [241756]: 4 years old; killed January 21. Paige’s owner tied her to the “shelter” gate and drove away. A volunteer said, “This worried girl makes me ache. Paige cries softly as we interact with her, vigilantly looking around to study every sound … Toys brighten her spirits and show us the puppy within this 4-year-old girl — she chases and jumps and plays and momentarily forgets her worries until she remembers them again, of course.”

A staff member said, “She is curious and alert, but can became anxious…” Fear is a no-no at NYC ACC, where they killed Paige after two months.

Tron [244639]: 3 years old; killed January 21. Tron was with his new family for only one month. They said he was friendly, playful, and protective. He spent most of his time in a crate in the living room where an “intense altercation” — one of several it seems — between family members caused Tron, just 43 pounds, to bust out of the crate and nip one of them. This hero dog became a victim when his humans surrendered him to ACC, which killed Tron on day 22.

Nelson [244532]: 5 years old; killed January 22. Police showed up at Nelson’s house in response to a 911 call about a domestic dispute and Nelson took the opportunity to escape through the front door. In the commotion of trying to secure him, he bit a police officer and was brought to ACC, trembling in the back of a cage.

Nelson was shut down and very afraid at ACC. Worse, he caught CIRDC due to ever-present unsanitary conditions. Despite — or, more likely, due to — his traumatic background and obvious fear, sparse ACC notes don’t indicate the “care center” gave him the care he desperately needed. Instead, ACC killed poor Nelson on day 24.

Winston [242834]: 2 years old; killed January 22. ACC labeled Winston “high arousal.” A volunteer seemed to think differently; they said, “During my time with Winston, he was really engaged with me … took treats gently and enjoyed chasing toys. He wasn’t overly excited and stayed content. He’s a social, friendly, wiggly, smart boy and I hope someone sees how special he is and gives him the second chance he deserves.” Given a high dose of the ACC human-grade compliance cocktail — Trazodone, Gabapentin and Clonidine — Winston didn’t get that chance. ACC killed him after seven weeks.

Ivory [243136]: 2 years old; killed January 26. Ivory, a stray, was fearful on intake, but relaxed during medical. This sweet girl struggled at ACC, surrounded by dogs who made her fearful. When staff noted increasing arousal, they put her on Clonidine. Weeks later, noting high leash reactivity, ACC veterinary staff dosed Ivory with Trazodone. That was the day they chose to spay her. Because she was not acclimating to Hell, ACC killed Ivory three weeks after surgery, seven weeks after arrival.

Blu [242365]: 1 year old; killed January 26. Blu was surrendered after the landlord kicked him out. His human said he was very playful and affectionate. A staff member agreed, saying, “He’s a bright, energetic young dog who can be sweet and wiggly with people he trusts — on walks he’ll check in, solicit pets, and happily engage with his handler.” In short, Blu was an adorable exuberant puppy, for which ACC killed him on day 34.

Colby [229986]: 2 years old; killed January 26. High-energy Colby was brought into ACC after an eviction. He was adopted by seniors, but returned because they couldn’t keep up with his desire to play all day. They said, “Play is his strongest impulse. If he does not get enough attention, he will steal your shoe or a cushion, or something he knows you want and tease you to chase him. It’s his favorite game.

“Colby has a very affectionate nature,” they said, “and he’s very smart. He loves to cuddle and craves contact.”

Volunteers agreed. Colby, they said, “is social and affectionate with people, especially his favorite handlers. He loves attention, leans in for pets, and responds beautifully to soft praise and encouragement.” An “exuberant” pup, he’s a “lively energetic boy with lots of pep in his step … He so enjoys cuddling with you on the bench in the backyard.”

His “very affectionate nature” didn’t save him. ACC killed Colby after three-and-a-half months.

Tyson [243756]: 3 years old; killed January 27. Tyson, kicked out by the landlord, came to ACC “friendly but scared.” His human said Tyson was shy of strangers, playful and friendly with visitors. Tyson grew anxious when left alone, and he was very alone in the shelter. Still, a volunteer said, “Tyson was very sweet overall. He knows sit, paw, loves treats, and he gently jumped and hugged staff, and enjoyed getting pet. A total snuggler.” ACC exterminated family pet Tyson on day 34.

Grandpa Joe [242287]: 9 years old; killed January 27. Grandpa Joe was found tied to a bench. Volunteers titled Grandpa Joe’s videos “sweet soul” & “9yo young.” Social and always eager to get out of his kennel, not happy to go back in, all Grandpa Joe needed was love, a home, and lots of butt scratches. Unfortunately, ACC gives seniors little care and no quarter. Grandpa Joe frequently didn’t feel well. He had gastrointestinal issues that caused vomiting. He wasn’t happy in the chaotic, cacophonous ACC environment. For that, ACC killed Grandpa Joe on day 38.

Justice [244305]: 1 year old; killed January 29. Justice was dropped off at the police station on Christmas Eve. He was all wags during the dog/dog meet, but timid and stressed by spending so much time in a hallway pop-up crate. A volunteer said, “Shy, skinny, not feeling that well, but such an absolutely lovely pup … Gentle, cuddly, affectionate, Justice is so lovely and will be even more so, once he feels a bit better.” ACC named him Justice but gave him none. Because he was “leash reactive,” ACC killed Justice on day 36.

Cosmo [244479]: 3 years old; killed January 30. Found abandoned on a rooftop, big beautiful 90-pound Cosmo came to ACC “friendly” and won best behavior on intake. He loved toys and treats and snuggling. Occasionally anxious, but not aggressive. ACC exterminated Cosmo on day 33 for biting his leash and kennel bars.

Makael [245764]: 3 years old; killed January 30. Gorgeous Makael’s human loved how “very loyal, protective and gentle he [could] be once trusting.” They described him as quiet, independent, and playful. He allowed his humans to bathe him. Terrified at ACC, the “shelter” gave him no help, no time to decompress, to trust. Rather, ACC gave him one photo and zero chances, exterminating Makael after 12 days.

Builder [245373]: 3 years old; killed January 31. Scared, shy strays need time to decompress. Builder didn’t get that at ACC. He learned to trust familiar handlers and cooperated with everything asked of him, but that wasn’t good enough. ACC killed the sweet, skinny boy with the worried eyes on day 21.

Cioccolata [242736]: 6 years old; killed January 31. Volunteers said Cioccolata’s favorite place to be was your lap. Her “crime” was a common one, especially for a stray: she was not a fan of the other dogs. Still, Cioccolata came in loose, wiggly, and social, and stayed that way. “The sweetest,” volunteers said time and time again. ACC killed Cioccolata after two months.

Honey [239893]: 3 years old; killed January 31. Her human was very ill and Honey, blind in one eye, was grieving and scared. A volunteer said, “This girl was a slow burn, revealing herself slowly but surely as we sat together in the yard. Undoubtedly fearful, at first she spent time waiting by the exit hoping to leave. Her right eye is cloudy and we were cautioned not to catch her by surprise. As always, time and patience yielded us some glimpses into her personality. She leaned her head into our hands to have her cheeks rubbed, and tilted for my silly noises with her bunny ears at full attention. She gently won us over, and I think we did the same.”

Honey came in with her sister, Sugar [239892], who was fostered and made available for adoption. When asked about behavior concerns, Honey’s human said, “None, my dog is the best!” Honey loved chewy and squeaky toys, and bath time. ACC killed Honey after three months.

Summit [235909]: 6 years old; killed January 31. After five months, 75-pound Summit was the second longest stay at ACC.

“What a fabulous pup,” said a volunteer, “so friendly and curious with lots of happy energy. He’s a big sniffer with his nose always to the ground, inspecting everything. But Summit’s a big mush, too, who the staff love to treat specially with the biggest squeaky toy they can find.“

Said an ACC staff member: “He’s a goofy, enthusiastic dog who loves carrying toys or blankets, soaking up belly rubs and leaning in for affection! He’s strong, curious, and happiest when he’s exploring or playing with his people.”

“Long-stay dogs feel like family,” another volunteer said. “Seeing [Summit kill-listed] breaks our hearts.”

ACC kills family. The “shelter” exterminated Summit on day 150.

About NYC ACC KILLS memoriam posts

Information in NYC ACC KILLS memoriam posts is drawn from the NYC ACC “at-risk outcomes” list. As evidenced by its monthly and annual outcome data reports, however, ACC kills far more cats and dogs than appear on the at-risk list. ACC exterminates many healthy and adoptable cats and dogs without first offering them for adoption. Victims of this ACC practice are known among advocates as “silent kills.”

ACC will often spay or neuter a cat or dog only to exterminate her or him during recovery, or soon after. This practice is known as “spay-neuter-kill.”

Known silent kills and spay-neuter-kill victims are identified as such by NYC ACC KILLS.

Since cats are underrepresented on ACC’s “at-risk outcomes” list, they are also underrepresented here.

CATS

Mango Milo [220262], 8 months old. Mango Milo was surrendered to ACC as a kitten because he had megacolon and his people could not afford his medical care. Volunteers said he “would benefit from a full medical workup and management of his condition,” but instead ACC killed kitten Mango Milo after two days.

Zoey [219926], 2 years old. Zoey was hit by a motorist and arrived at ACC with a dislocated hip. Despite his circumstances, he was “quiet and tolerate[d] all medical handling.” ACC does not take kindly to animals getting sick or injured. Though he had a rescue lined up, ACC killed Zoey after nine days.

Marble [219805], 12 years old. Marble was surrendered to ACC “after his previous owner could no longer care for him.” Described by his person as “affectionate” and “talkative,” Marble was also underweight and diabetic. Rather than treat his illness in preparation for his new home, the “care center” exterminated Marble after four days.

DOGS

Alexi [215522], 2 years old. Little Alexi was ripped from all she knew when NYPD took her person away. Though out of sorts and frightened, volunteers say Sassy warmed quickly. “A sweet, shy, unassuming girl who, within minutes, becomes all soft and waggy,” Sassy was exterminated by ACC after eight weeks.

Sassy [220281], 3 years old. Sassy and her bonded sister, Sparkles, were separated by ACC when both dogs were dumped by their people. Sparkles made it out alive, though forever without her sibling. Sassy was confused, traumatized and terrified, so ACC exterminated her after 14 days.

Omni [213102], 2 years old. Little Omni survived her first brush with ACC, but was bounced around among people who eventually brought her there again, this time for good. Patient and “happy all the time,” Omni won over volunteers who cradled her in their arms. ACC exterminated her after 17 days.

Nikky [220022], 9 years old. Nikky was admitted at ACC after his person passed away. Volunteers say he was “so amazing he earned the highest behavior score a dog can get — the coveted Level 1.” Sadly, Nikky was stressed at the “shelter,” so ACC exterminated him less than a month later.

Bronstein [219540], 1 year old. Bronstein was adopted from and returned to ACC twice in his first and only year of existence. A normal, energetic puppy with a big life ahead of him, he did not survive his second encounter with the “care center,” where he was exterminated after just 16 days.

Nugget [215039], 4 years old. Nugget was surrendered to ACC by his people. Yet volunteers say he was “immediately social with the medical staff, wiggling and wagging his tail, trying to get everyone’s attention.” The ACC medical staff that Nugget was excited to see exterminated him after nine weeks.

Triceratops [219362], 3 years old. When Triceratops was admitted as a stray, ACC stuffed the 53-pound dog into a pop-up crate, where he “[had] to spend almost 24 hours a day … unable to stretch his legs, [with] enough room only to turn around and sit back down.” ACC killed him after 26 days.

Blue Diamond [216985], 5 years old. Volunteers suspected Blue Diamond was “often bred” before her people dropped her at ACC. Timid on walks but otherwise “loose and wiggly,” she unfortunately “failed” one of ACC’s arbitrary behavior tests, which was all the “care center” needed to exterminate Blue Diamond after nine weeks.

Green [216243], 4 years old. Brought to ACC by a family that could “no longer care for him,” Green was described by his people as “friendly, outgoing, playful and tolerant of visitors and children,” adding, “He is also good with dogs he is familiar with.” ACC exterminated Green after seven weeks.

Soldier [214127], 1 year old. Soldier’s people likely thought they were doing the right thing by turning over their beloved puppy to ACC when medical issues made it impossible to care for him properly. Little did they know the “shelter” they entrusted Soldier to would exterminate him after seven weeks.

Griffin [220129], 3 years old. Griffin was abandoned in a vacant apartment before he was brought to the “care center.” Though clearly traumatized by his ordeal before his arrival, Griffin received no quarter at ACC, which exterminated him after 13 days.

Tepig [218960], 3 years old. Tepig was brought to ACC as a stray with a short, hard life. Described as “even too nervous to meet other dogs,” Tepig needed not much more than patience and understanding to land his best life. But because he was scared, ACC exterminated him after less than a month.

Two To Tango [214423], 6 years old. Two To Tango arrived at ACC as a stray and was named by ACC. Being a dog, she did not react well to a strange environment where she was warehoused with minimal attention. For that offense, ACC exterminated her after three months.

North [219587], 1 year old. Admitted as a stray, North entered ACC with “his tail wagging furiously, jumping on everyone and wanting to get attention.” North’s disposition soon deteriorated in the kill pound’s unforgiving environment — a capital offense at ACC, which killed North after 11 days.

Digital [219627], 1 year old. Brought to ACC as a stray, Digital was described as frightened and “uncomfortable with touch in certain areas,” possibly due to a history of abuse. Though he was otherwise healthy, ACC exterminated puppy Digital after 12 days.

Reese's Puffs [217985], 2 years old. Volunteers said this big guy looked to have had a rough life before he was admitted to ACC. Described as “loose” and “wiggly” on intake, Reese’s Puffs did not respond well to the hellish ACC environment and was exterminated after five weeks.

Calypso [204938], 1 year old. Calypso was initially admitted to ACC in July 2024, when she was adopted. Unfortunately, she was returned to the kill pound in January. Rather than give her another chance at adoption, ACC exterminated Calypso after a month.

King Concierge [219413], 5 years old. King Concierge was brought to ACC by his people, who said he bit the family cat. He was also reported to be “underweight” on intake. Rather than place him in a more attentive and caring home, ACC killed King Concierge after 13 days.

Zeus [219007], 3 years old. When Zeus’ person died, he was taken to ACC by neighbors who likely thought they were helping him. The good Samaritans left “glowing notes” for Zeus, whom ACC exterminated eight days later.

Singer [218786], 2 years old. Unfortunately at publication TSNY had little information on Singer that is not on his poster. We don’t know how or why he was admitted to ACC. We do know that, rather than find him a loving forever home, the “shelter” ended Singer’s short, sad life on February 9, 2025.

Jack [219571], 2 years old. Jack was admitted to ACC as a stray. Described as having “high levels of fear, stress, and anxiety” in a kill pound surrounded by indifferent strangers, Jack was recommended “long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise.” Instead, ACC killed Jack after 10 days.

Luccien [217287], 2 years old. Luccien was found alone in the freezing cold just before Christmas and brought to NYC ACC by NYPD. Despite his sweet, social nature and solid behavior rating, ACC failed to find Luccien a home, and killed him after seven weeks.

Ryder [219558], 2 years old. Ryder ended up at ACC reportedly after his face was grabbed and he reacted negatively. Despite his normally easygoing, affectionate manner, ACC fast-tracked Ryder’s execution, killing him after 10 days in the “shelter.”

Stella [218095], 9 months old. Stella was found in Brooklyn and admitted to ACC as a stray. Because she showed fear of her loud, unfamiliar, menacing environment, ACC exterminated Stella less than a month later.

Louie Lou [217997], 2 years old. Louie Lou was admitted to ACC as a stray. Because he showed fear of his loud, unfamiliar, menacing environment, ACC killed him after four weeks and a day.

Sprite [216598], 12 months old. Sprite was surrendered to ACC due to a move. Young, sweet, rambunctious and fun, she should have been no problem for ACC, with its $1B+ contract, to place in a permanent home. Instead, puppy Sprite was worn down by weeks of mistreatment at the “care center,” which exterminated her after 53 days.

Brownie Brittle [217175], 2 years old. Volunteers say Brownie Brittle “was abandoned by her owner with a family who said they did not ‘have the time for her.’” ACC exterminated Brownie Brittle after three weeks.

About NYC ACC KILLS memoriam posts

Information in NYC ACC KILLS memoriam posts is drawn from the NYC ACC “at-risk outcomes” list. As evidenced by its monthly and annual outcome data reports, however, ACC kills far more cats and dogs than appear on the at-risk list. ACC exterminates many healthy and adoptable cats and dogs without first offering them for adoption. Victims of this ACC practice are known among advocates as “silent kills.”

ACC will often spay or neuter a cat or dog only to exterminate her or him during recovery, or soon after. This practice is known as “spay-neuter-kill.”

Known silent kills and spay-neuter-kill victims are identified as such by NYC ACC KILLS.

Since cats are underrepresented on ACC’s “at-risk outcomes” list, they are also underrepresented here.

Due to gaps in NYC ACC record-keeping, memoriam posts are, sadly, bound to be incomplete. Names and images of exterminated animals we miss will be added after publication when possible.

A note about names: Many animals come to NYC ACC with unknown histories, including their names. In addition, ACC does not always use the name a cat or dog is accustomed to, even if the agency knows what it is. As a result, many animals exterminated by ACC are never properly identified. Unfortunately, for the most part NYC ACC KILLS has only the names provided by ACC, even if those names are incorrect or nonsensical. ACC-assigned names are presented here without quotation marks unless TSNY can confirm an animal was known by a different name when admitted to ACC.

NYC ACC operates under putative supervision by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, which endorses killing healthy and adoptable cats and dogs at will and with impunity. In January 2025, the city’s acting health commissioner was Michelle Morse. Her boss, the mayor, was Eric Adams.

Note that ACC omits from its “euthanasia” totals owner-surrendered animals who were exterminated without being offered for adoption. Placement rates reported by ACC do not include such cats and dogs, but they are counted among the dead by TSNY.

Cats and dogs whom ACC classifies as “passed” or “lost” are named and counted by TSNY, among the cats and dogs ACC destroyed with intent.

In memoriam

CATS

Parsley [217506], 2 years old. Volunteers say Parsley was dumped at ACC for scratching her owner. Being a cat, she did not immediately take to her new surroundings. Parsley reportedly contracted an upper respiratory infection at ACC, where disease transmission among captive animals is common. Because she was sick, ACC exterminated Parsley after less than a month.

DOGS

Zoey [216153], 3 years old. Zoey was kicked out of her home and separated from two children she loved after a new baby arrived. Like many dogs admitted to ACC, Zoey was frightened — a death sentence at the NYC kill pound. ACC killed Zoey after three weeks.

Remy [201236], 10 years old. Remy reportedly came to ACC from a home where physical violence was common. Described as “the gentlest of souls,” Remy was so frightened at ACC that volunteer say she was “chewing a hole” in the wall of her kennel. ACC exterminated Remy after 17 days.

Robert [191779], 1 year old. Robert was admitted to ACC in January 2024, when he was just a few weeks old. He was returned to the pound 11 months later. Reportedly because he behaved like a puppy, ACC put Robert on death row. ACC killed Robert after just three weeks.

Echo [215826], 11 months old. Echo was found “tied up in the freezing cold and abandoned by the person he trusted.” Echo was sick with kennel cough at ACC. ACC exterminated puppy Echo after five weeks.

Ashland [215510], 2 years old. Ashland was found tied up with another dog, Woodland, who was reportedly placed with a rescue. After separating him forever from another dog he was potentially bonded with, ACC exterminated Ashland six weeks later.

Baby [214739], 7 years old. Silent kill. Baby was warehoused at ACC for over a month before she was put on death row — at about the same time ACC released her info to volunteers working to save the “shelter”’s death row animals. ACC killed Baby about 10 days later.

Saint [214430], 5 years old. Described as a “sweet boy” who wanted “to make friends with the new humans in his life,” Saint thought his people were taking him on a car ride when they dumped him at NYC ACC, reportedly because he was sick. ACC exterminated Saint after six weeks.

Pringle [216270], 4 years old. NYPD took Pringle to ACC as a stray after officers reportedly shot three tranq darts into her, leaving one dart in her flesh during transport. Pringle was scared and confused at ACC, which landed her on death row. ACC exterminated Pringle after one month.

Gunther [214521], 5 years old. Gunther was dumped by his family reportedly because he got too excited around the new baby. Rather than place him with people who would love and care for him forever, ACC exterminated Gunther after one month.

Glamorous [217482], 1 year old. Brought to ACC as a stray, Glamorous was initially “friendy” and “social.” But because she was “frightened and overwhelmed” when left alone in a cage, ACC kill-listed her for behavoir issues and exterminated her after just two weeks.

Hammer [215905], 1 year old. “Stunning” Hammer had a good start in life, volunteers say, “with kids and hour long walks, and bones and toys and games of fetch.” Surrendered due to a move, ACC killed him after five weeks.

Crew [215222], 4 years old. Crew was “with his family since the day he was born” until he was surrendered due to owner health issues. A “highly active, playful boy” described by volunteers as a “very good listener,” Crew was at the “shelter” less than a month before ACC exterminated him.

Tinsel [217383], 2 years old. Tinsel was reportedly found on Christmas Eve, tied to a fence by a rusted chain around his neck “that had to be cut off.” Shy and scared, volunteers believe Tinsel had never known peace in his short life. Rather than keeping him safe until placing him in his forever home, ACC exterminated Tinsel after just two weeks.

Mascarpone/Avery [214282], 4 years old. ACC apparently changed Mascarpone’s name to “Avery.” Surrendered by his people for behavior, volunteers said Mascarpone “seems used to family life, staying cozy with his person and sitting for treats.” ACC exterminated him after two weeks.

Tanner [191538], 4 years old. Tanner reportedly had a home until his people, moving into housing that does not allow pets, returned him to ACC. Though shy, volunteers said Tanner warmed to them quickly, “leaning almost right into our laps for cuddles.” ACC exterminated Tanner after five weeks.

Sugar Cube [217495], 6 years old. Surrendered as a stray, Sugar Cube was “confused, scared, [and] overwhelmed” when he arrived at ACC, where he reportedly suffered from kennel cough. Because it was easier than finding him a loving home, ACC killed Sugar Cube after three weeks.

Peppa [217275], 1 year old. Described by volunteers as “adorable” and “exuberant,” Peppa was reclaimed from ACC by her people only to end up there again. She did not survive the second stay, as ACC exterminated Peppa after less than a month.

Persia [218388], 1 year old. Persia was surrendered to ACC as a stray. ACC reportedly put her on death row after she resisted being shoved into a kennel because, according to volunteers, she wanted “to be with people all the time.” ACC killed Persia after eight days.

Madara [213753], 4 years old. Madara was brought to ACC as a stray by NYPD. Tense and frightened, volunteers say he “seemed more relaxed” when released from the NYPD crate. ACC killed him 11 weeks later.

Walnut [211196], 4 years old. Walnut reportedly showed signs of abuse when he was surrendered to ACC by people who’d had him two months. ACC exterminated him two weeks later.

Siah [217814], 2 years old. Siah was surrendered by his person due to finances, separating him from his humans and his bonded cat sister, Lucky, who was also dumped. Siah was so gentle he was “known to cuddle and sleep next to [his family’s] newborn baby.” ACC killed him after three weeks.

Kali [213203], 5-7 years old. “Cute cute” Kali was brought to ACC by someone who “found her tied up.” On intake, Kali was underweight with her face and body covered in “scars and open wounds,” indicating a history of abuse. She was reportedly still sick when ACC killed her after two months.

Ms. Cool [212912], 2 years old. Described by volunteers as a “cuddlebug,” Ms. Cool was reportedly dumped by her people due to their landlord’s “no pets” policy. ACC killed her three months later.

Jetta [217355], 8 years old. Jetta reportedly lived with the same people until they dumped her, sick, on Christmas Eve. Rather than treat her illnesses and find her a forever home, ACC killed her after less than a month.

Mocha Mocha [218439], 2 years old. Mocha Mocha was reportedly dumped by her person after she thought she was protecting him from a friend while he was drunk and vomiting. ACC killed her 13 days later.

Tommy [218461], 2 years old. Tommy was taken to ACC after he was found chained to a park fence. Before transporting him, NYPD reportedly shot Tommy with a tranquilizer, injuring his shoulder. ACC killed him 15 days later.

Baelon [210372], 2 years old. Baelon arrived at ACC as a stray. Described by volunteers as "very friendly, outgoing, wiggly and sweet," ACC exterminated him after four months.

Klondike [213340], 3 years old. Klondike was surrendered to ACC as a stray. He was scared at first, then "opened up," seeking treats from handlers. Though Klondike was young and healthy, ACC killed him after 90 days.

NYC ACC KILLS, published by TSNY, enumerates and memorializes adoptable cats and dogs who were nonetheless exterminated by Animal Care Centers of New York City.

NYC ACC compiles intake and outcome data for monthly reports. The agency, however, releases those reports sporadically. Once ACC releases a report — which can take several months — TSNY gets to work collecting names and images of animals killed by ACC during that particular month.

Images and write-ups of exterminated animals are sourced primarily from advocates and ACC volunteers, upon whom ACC depends to do its job.

The Scoop New York is continually adding names and images of NYC ACC victims to NYC ACC KILLS. In addition to gathering names and images from the most recent data reports, we are currently filling in images of exterminated cats and dogs back to January 2024, the year of TSNY’s debut, and will publish each 2024 month as individual posts are ready.

As images are added, they are posted on social media.
